Ewell R. McCright collection, 1942-1985.

The most important aspect of this collection are copies of the journals kept by Ewell McCright during his time as a prisoner of war during World War II. Three of the original journals are housed in the Library of Congress and one is held at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) library in the Clark Special Collections area . McCright detailed the personal backgrounds and wartime injuries of more than two thousand prisoners in four journals, which he hid under the floorboards of the prisoner barracks. When forced to move to another camp, McCright secretly carried the journals with him in place of food. The journals contain brief histories of the capture and treatment of allied Air Force prisoners of war brought to the south compound of Stalag Luft III in Sagan, Germany. Also included are comments relating to other prisoner of war camps and Nazi concentration camps, especially Buchenwald.
